Introduction

THE UK AIDS QUILT MEMORIAL SITE

We are pleased to welcome you to AIDSquilt.org.uk a place for people to remember those that have died from AIDS in the UK.

The International Names Project AIDS Quilt is a memorial project started in San Francisco in 1985 that has spread worldwide, as friends and loved ones have created panels and testimonials to remember those they have lost.

The National AIDS Trust set up the website to bring the personal memorials of people who have died from AIDS in the UK to a wider audience. The website also aims to increase public awareness of the enormity of the epidemic and its devastating impact on individual lives and communities.

NAT - National Aids Trust

There have been dramatic and positive changes in the experience of people living with HIV since the 1980's, but the HIV epidemic continues to grow at an alarming rate. Increasing access to prevention and treatment programmes to fight the disease continues to be a challenge, not least because stigma and discrimination continues to blight the lives of those living with the virus in the UK and worldwide.

As well as a creative means of remembrance, the AIDS quilt aims to educate people about HIV prevention, fight stigma and bring home the message that this is no time for complacency.

Memorials of over 300 people who have died from AIDS can be found on this website. Every effort has been made by the National AIDS Trust to locate all the panels from across the UK and bring them together physically and virtually. The physical home of the panels featured on the website is the George House Trust in Manchester - contact details can be found under the Information and Links section.

You can look at the panels and read the testimonials; remember friends and loved ones; or just experience the creative and moving stories that the Quilt represents.
